What is the difference between water based and solvent based polyurethane?

Solvent-based polyurethane and water-based floor polishing oils are two different types of coatings that can be used to protect and enhance the appearance of hardwood floors.

Solvent-based polyurethane is a traditional type of floor polish that is made by mixing a solvent, such as mineral spirits or xylene, with polyurethane resin. This mixture creates a durable, water-resistant finish that can withstand heavy foot traffic and other wear and tear. Solvent-based polyurethane has a strong odor and requires proper ventilation during application. It also has a longer drying time than water-based floor polishing oils and can take up to 24 hours to dry completely.

Water-based floor polishing oils, on the other hand, are made by mixing water with polyurethane resin. This type of floor polish has a lower VOC (volatile organic compounds) content and emits less odor than solvent-based polyurethane. It also dries faster, with most products being able to dry within 2-4 hours. However, it may not be as durable as solvent-based polyurethane and may require more frequent reapplication.

Overall, the choice between solvent-based polyurethane and water-based floor polishing oils depends on individual preferences and needs. Solvent-based polyurethane may be more suitable for high-traffic areas, while water-based floor polishing oils may be preferred for their lower VOC content and faster drying time. It is important to consider the pros and cons of each option before making a decision.
